Attendance Matters

Regular attendance at school is vital to help children achieve and have the best possible start in life.

Children who frequently miss school often fall behind. There is a strong link between good school attendance and achieving good results. 

For example;

Only 12% of pupils with below 80% school attendance achieve five or more GCSEs at grades A*-C including English and Maths, compared to 68% for pupils with attendance greater than 95%.

Pupils with no absence are 3 times more likely to achieve age related standards, than pupils that missed 10-15% of all sessions.



Developing good habits

In addition to academic attainment, by attending school every day students develop good habits that are necessary to succeed after school, whether in the workplace or in further study.

To ensure the best possible outcomes for our students' attendance will be measured as follows:

  1. Pupils demonstrating a determination to succeed in attendance for academic achievement will be rewarded in school.

  2. If your child's attendance falls below 95% for the school year this is deemed as lost learning as it can result in a serious risk to academic achievement. Pupils who fall below 95% will be closely monitored in school by Attendance officers, Heads of Year and their Form Tutors.

This system will ensure immediate action is taken to support your child's attainment and progress whilst at Bolton St Catherine's Academy.



As an academy, we believe there is no safe number of days for a student to miss school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes. Whilst we endeavour to promote full time attendance, we do understand that unavoidable absences do occur (i.e. illness). In this instance, please ring the absence line on 01204 201144, before 8:30am.

A text message will be sent to you for any unauthorised/unexplained absences, to ensure we know where your child is. Any concerns about your child's attendance can be discussed in the first instance with your child's year leader.



To ensure that we encourage all our students to achieve, we will share with you your child's level of attendance every half term, via letter that will:

  • Congratulate and reward pupils demonstrating a determination to succeed and accepting the challenge in attendance for academic achievement.
  • Ask for your support in monitoring attendance between 90-94.9% as this lost learning in school can result in a serious risk to academic achievement.
  • Offer support but also stress the consequences of poor attendance, below 90%, to pupils and their families.
