THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

This coming Sunday is the celebration of the life of St Catherine of Alexandria, of who our school is named after. If you don’t know anything about her life, she became a Christian at the age of 14 and was martyred only 4 years later at the age of 18 for standing for what she believed in.

If you watched ‘I’m a celebrity get me out of here’ the other day, you will have seen two celebrities jump out of an aeroplane. It reminded me of the day as an 18 year old girl that I did a bungee jump over the Zambezi bridge in Africa (which at the time had a frayed bungee rope!!!) I’m glad I did it then at the age of 18, but I’m not sure I’d do it again now at the age of 31.

CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK

As we get older and ‘wiser’, we also become more logical about things, which can be a good thing. However sometimes we can go too far and allow ‘wisdom in years and experience’ to stop us from taking risks. We reason ourselves out of doing things that scare us out of a fear of failing, because we know logically it is a possibility. We lean too much on our own understanding as the verse says above, and not enough on faith. As we remember St Catherine this week, our challenge is to let her daring and bold years as a teenager, encourage us to still have that attitude in our later years. Take on that challenge, do the thing that scares you, risk failing…because maybe you won’t fail at all and maybe you’ll achieve the very thing you’ve always dreamt of.
