Procedures for Rewards
BSCA is committed to recognise and reward students who go ‘over and above’ our standards. Although we recognise that if students are to do their best, they must feel that their efforts are recognised and appreciated both at home and in school, we also understand that a quiet word of personal praise can be as effective as a larger, more public reward. The use of praise in developing a positive atmosphere in the classroom cannot be underestimated. It is the key to developing positive relationships, including with those learners who are hardest to reach. BSCA therefore has a variety of ways of acknowledging student success that are both extrinsic and intrinsic in motivation.
Student recognition
Each day, staff give recognition to students who have demonstrated our values or desired learning behaviours in an exceptional way. Recognitions are shared during RISE each day. See above.
Verbal appreciations
Around the academy, and in lessons, staff members use positive language, specific descriptive feedback and reinforcement to signal to students that they are demonstrating the learning behaviours we desire. Teachers follow a positive call a day strategy and ring home; this is an opportunity to provide family with positive information.
Texts
Each day texts are sent home for students who receive determination to succeed in every lesson.
Postcards & Hot Chocolate
Students who receive a full day of determination to succeed are sent a postcard from the headteacher. In support of the behaviours we desire, the students with the most determination to succeed throughout the week receive a hot chocolate package on Friday during PCW.
Termly rewards assemblies
At the end of each term, students are recognised in rewards assemblies for contribution to school values, S2S and attendance. The assemblies provide an opportunity for students to be recognised for their effort and progress over the term and to recognise for themselves their successes.
Wall of Recognition
At the end of every half term the wall of recognition outside the pastoral hub will be updated to celebrate students who are leading the way in each of the school values.
Aspire Lounge
Students who endure success over time will be invited into the Aspire Lounge. A criteria for excellence will be set whereby students who avoid S2S lost learning, selfish and disrespectful and only regularly achieve excellence will be invited into he lounge at social time. This will be set by pastoral leaders.
Whole School rewards system
The whole school rewards system adopts a positive and growth mind-set approach only. This means once awarded, credit points cannot be taken away. School can still use ‘Steps to Success’ and the SIMS behaviour management system to highlight pupils who are not following school rules and expectations.
