Academy delivers New Young Masterchefs

Posted on 8th December, 2015

Kieran McCormack from Year 10 and Ryan Williams from Year 13 both competed in the Local Heat of the Rotary Club Young Chef of the Year Award and we are so proud to let everyone know that Kieran came 1st and Ryan a very close 3rd. The competitors came from as far afield Cumbria and Biddulph in Staffordshire to compete at the Radclyffe School in Chadderton.

With the support of Rob Alcock, our Executive Chef and Scott Reynard, our Food and Catering specialist teacher the budding professional chefs had to prepare in one and a half hours a two course healthy meal comprising starter, main course and dessert for two people costing less than £10.

After much deliberation and many trial dishes later the team left the Academy  loaded with food, display dishes and nervous tummies for the challenge ahead. Both Kieran and Ryan rose to the challenge and confidently cooked their way to success. Kieran made a pan fried breast of chicken with fondant potatoes, roasted vegetables and a red wine and shallot sauce followed by gooey chocolate pudding with a raspberry coulis. Ryan’s menu was equally tempting with pan fried Salmon with butter sauce, a medley of green vegetables and anna potatoes followed by a frozen lemon meringue surprise.

Mr Alcock and Mr Reynard said about both boys ‘both Kieran and Ryan put in a tremendous amount of hard work and we are so proud to see them achieve such a fabulous result’. Ryan was thrilled to come third and said ‘it was just so amazing to do the competition and couldn’t have done it without the support of the teachers and staff’. Kieran is still quite shocked he won and commented ‘entering this really opened my eyes and helped me to improve my cooking skills. It was so good to meet other young people who enjoy cooking just like me’

Now the hard work starts again with Kieran preparing to devise his menu for the 3 course meal he has to cook at the District Finals to be held in January – mid February 2016. We wish Kieran every success.
