Français Spelling Bee

Posted on 7th April, 2016

Our Year 7 students have recently taken part in ‘The Foreign Language Spelling Bee’ which is a competition for students to practice and improve their vocabulary, spelling and memory skills in a foreign language – French. They have to translate the words from English and spell them in the target language.

The competition has 4 stages:

Class competition (Autumn Term)

  • School Competition (first half of Spring Term)
  • Regional Final (usually end of Spring Term)
  • National Final (end of Summer Term)

So all our Year 7 students had to learn 50 words per stage in the French with the first two rounds being held at the Academy.

During the Easter holidays Mr Gaido, Stephanie Hammond and Jack Horrocks (and Jack’s Mum) went off to Manchester University to take part in the RegionalFinal.    Bolton St Catherine’s Academy was represented by Stephanie and Jack – the first time ever we had entered the competition and unfortunately neither of them made it into the National Final. Both of them thoroughly enjoyed competing and were totally amazed at the number of words other Year 7 students could translate and spell in a very, very short space of time.

Jack’s Mum said ‘I felt so proud and amazed at the same time. It was lovely to see Jack and Stephanie taking their turn in the competition. They did so, so well’. Seeing the other children take part really shocked me, they knew so much and were so fast’.

Stephanie and Jack received a certificate for taking part and are hoping Year 7 take part again next year.                                         .spellingbeelogo.jpg
