CISI’s Careers in Investment Management Insight Conference

Students from eight schools including Bolton St Catherine’s Academy recently attended the CISI’s Careers in Investment Management Insight Conference, spending the day immersed in a range of activities and talks designed to provide an overview of careers in investment management. Mr Yeandle took his BTEC and A Level Business Sixth Form students along to Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester.

Manchester firms involved were: BNY Mellon, Castlefield Investment Partnership, Barclays Wealth and Handelsbanken, with representatives from BPP, Kaplan and The Skills Company also attending to speak with students about apprenticeship opportunities.

Students were welcomed by BNY Mellon’s chief administration officer Elizabeth Potier; and the president of the CISI Manchester & District Committee and Head of Research at Castlefield Investment Partnership, David Gorman, Chartered MCSI.

David said: “It was fantastic to build on last year’s conference with more students from more schools and colleges this year. I really enjoyed meeting all of the participants and I hope they had a productive day. Thanks are due to the team at BNY Mellon for the major part they played in a very successful day.”

The students heard about different careers in the sector, carried out a team building icebreaker activity (involving bamboo sticks, elastic bands and ping pong balls!) speed-networked with senior practitioners, trainees and apprentices and apprenticeship training providers, developed their investment strategies by taking part in BNY Mellon’s ‘Top Trader’ investment activity and received top tips about applying for jobs from BNY Mellon’s recruitment staff.

Feedback from the students was good. One, from Manchester Grammar School, said: “The conference made me consider apprenticeships, something which I had never thought about. It gave me an insight into what you can do after college/sixth form other than university.” Another, from Cardinal Langley Roman Catholic High School, praised its “excellent delivery from start to finish” and Millie Greer from BSCA was so thrilled to be on the #TopTrader team with profits of £33,000. Millie wants to go back again next year so she can be part of the winning team.
