The Caldwell Cup for Girls 5-a-side Football

This competition saw the largest turnout in its history - 8 teams from 7 schools entered – BSCA, Ss Osmund and Andrew,  St Stephens All Martyrs CE Primary School A and B, Castle Hill Primary, Blackshaw, Tonge Moor and Moorgate. The students from all the schools participated in what turned out to be the best competition so far. The effort and enthusiasm of the girls was a joy to behold with a number of girls catching the eye of both the referee and the spectators with their technical ability and skill.

The teams were placed into 2 groups with the winners and runners up going through to the semi-finals.

The holders SS Osmund and Andrew won their group and went forward to meet St Stephen and All Martyrs , runners up in their group, in the first semi. The game was 1-1 at the end of normal time, but two quickfire goals in extra time sealed a shock victory for Stephen and All Martyrs.

The other semi produced a moment of history, the first match to be decided on penalties - you couldn’t place a piece of paper between group winners Blackshaw and Tonge Moor. The match wet to penalties and on the very final penalty shot Blackshaw missed, sealing victory for Tonge Moor by 1-0.

The final was in some ways an anti-climax with Tonge Moor never in danger, eventually running out comfortable winners by 2-0.
